Banking & Credit

A collections account exists when an unpaid debt is sold or assigned to a collection agency. It signals to lenders that you previously failed to pay, severely damaging your credit. Collections remain on credit reports for 7 years from the original delinquency date, not the date sold to collections. Medical collections under $500 are no longer reported (FICO change in 2023). Paid medical collections are removed entirely. Strategies: negotiate 'pay for delete' agreements where the collector removes the account in exchange for payment, or settle for a percentage of the original debt.
