Credit Limit

Banking & Credit

A credit limit is the maximum amount a lender allows you to borrow on a revolving account (credit card, line of credit). Limits are set based on income, credit score, debt-to-income, and account history. Higher limits with controlled spending help your utilization ratio (a key FICO factor). Requesting periodic limit increases — and being granted them without a hard pull — is a smart credit-building move. Conversely, lenders can reduce your limit unexpectedly if they detect financial stress or non-use. Never max out a card; ideally use less than 10-30% of your limit at statement time.
