Federal income tax is a progressive tax levied by the IRS on individual and corporate income. The 2026 individual brackets are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%, applied to taxable income (gross minus deductions). Tax is collected through withholding (W-2 employees) and quarterly estimated payments (self-employed). Federal income tax funds about 50% of federal spending (defense, Medicare, Social Security). Filing is annual via Form 1040 by April 15 (or October 15 with extension). About 90% of filers take the standard deduction; the rest itemize. Federal tax is calculated separately from state, FICA, and Medicare taxes.
