Five Forces

Porter's Five Forces is a strategic framework analyzing industry competitive intensity: (1) Competitive Rivalry — number and aggressiveness of competitors; (2) Threat of New Entrants — barriers to entry; (3) Bargaining Power of Suppliers — concentration, switching costs; (4) Bargaining Power of Buyers — concentration, price sensitivity; (5) Threat of Substitutes — alternative products solving the same problem. Industries with high force intensity have low profitability (airlines, restaurants); low intensity industries are profitable (consulting, software). Strategic position involves choosing industries with attractive forces and positioning to mitigate force pressures. The framework predates SaaS but remains broadly applicable.
