Form 1099-NEC reports Nonemployee Compensation — payments of $600+ during the year to independent contractors, freelancers, and self-employed individuals. Replaced Box 7 of the old 1099-MISC starting 2020. Filed by the payer; copy to recipient by January 31. Income reported on Schedule C of the recipient's tax return, subject to self-employment tax. Common 1099-NEC issuers: businesses paying freelancers, gig platforms (Uber, DoorDash issue based on different thresholds), royalty payers. Even if you don't receive a 1099 (under $600 threshold or oversight), you must still report all self-employment income. The IRS receives copies and cross-references with your return.
