Banking & Credit

A secured credit card requires a refundable cash deposit (typically $200-$500) that serves as your credit limit. It's designed for those building or rebuilding credit. The card reports to all three bureaus like any other credit card. After 6-12 months of responsible use (on-time payments, low utilization), you can usually graduate to an unsecured card and get your deposit refunded. Discover it Secured, Capital One Quicksilver Secured, and Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Secured are popular options that offer rewards and a path to unsecured. Avoid prepaid debit cards — they don't build credit.
