Tax Penalty

Tax

Tax penalties are additional charges the IRS assesses for various failures: failure to file (5%/month of unpaid tax, max 25%), failure to pay (0.5%/month, max 25%), underpayment of estimated tax (interest based on Federal Short-Term Rate + 3%), accuracy-related (20% of underpayment due to negligence or substantial understatement), fraud (75%). Combined with interest (currently 8% annually), penalties accumulate fast. First-time penalty abatement is available for taxpayers with clean compliance history. File even if you can't pay — failure-to-file penalty is 10× failure-to-pay. Negotiate via installment agreements (under $50K, automatic 6-year) or Offer in Compromise (settle for less).
