Withholding

Withholding is the portion of your paycheck your employer sends directly to federal and state tax authorities based on your W-4. Goal: pay roughly the correct amount across the year. Too much withholding means an interest-free loan to the government (refund); too little can trigger underpayment penalties. The 2020 W-4 redesign eliminated allowances and uses dollar-amount adjustments. Review withholding after life events: marriage, divorce, baby, second job, large bonus, RSU vesting. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Self-employed individuals make quarterly estimated payments instead. Adjusting withholding to break even on tax day maximizes cash flow during the year.
