Form 1099 is a family of IRS forms reporting various types of non-W-2 income. 1099-NEC reports nonemployee compensation (freelance and contract income over $600). 1099-MISC reports rent, royalties, and other miscellaneous income. 1099-INT reports interest income. 1099-DIV reports dividends. 1099-B reports brokerage transactions. 1099-R reports retirement plan distributions. You'll receive 1099s from any payer who issued you $600+ (lower thresholds for some categories). Even if you don't receive a 1099, you're still required to report the income. The IRS receives copies of all 1099s and cross-references them with your return.
