Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities (onset before age 26). Contributions grow tax-free; qualified disability expenses are tax-free withdrawals. Annual contribution limit: $19,000 (2026, indexed). Employed ABLE account holders can contribute additional earnings up to federal poverty line. ABLE balances under $100,000 don't affect SSI eligibility. Available in most US states (Ohio, California, Tennessee, others have programs). Significantly better than third-party special needs trusts for many disability-related savings goals. Saver's Credit applies to ABLE contributions. Coordinate with 529-to-ABLE rollovers (limited annual amounts allowed).
