Brokerage Account

A brokerage account is a taxable investment account where you can buy and sell stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds, and options. Unlike retirement accounts, there are no contribution limits, no early withdrawal penalties, and complete flexibility on what you invest in. The trade-off: no tax shelter — dividends, interest, and realized gains are taxable annually. Major brokerages: Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab, E*Trade, Robinhood. Standard accounts are individual; joint accounts allow shared ownership; trust accounts hold assets for beneficiaries. For long-term wealth building, max your tax-advantaged accounts (401k, IRA, HSA) first, then add taxable brokerage for additional savings.
