Cash Basis Accounting

Cash basis accounting recognizes revenue when cash is received and expenses when cash is paid — simpler than accrual but less accurate for matching income with operating period. Permitted for small businesses (under $30M average receipts for IRS, varies by entity). Many freelancers and sole proprietors use cash basis for simplicity. Drawbacks: distorts profitability when income/expenses are lumpy, makes period-to-period comparisons unreliable, doesn't satisfy GAAP. Switching from cash to accrual requires careful planning and IRS approval. For internal management, even cash-basis businesses benefit from accrual-style monthly P&L for decision-making.
