Chart of Accounts

Accounting

Chart of Accounts (COA) is the structured list of all financial accounts a business uses, organized by account type (Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Revenue, Expense) and assigned account numbers (typically Assets 1000-1999, Liabilities 2000-2999, Equity 3000-3999, Revenue 4000-4999, Expense 5000+). A well-designed COA matches the business's operations — too few accounts and you can't analyze; too many and reports become unwieldy. Industry-specific COAs exist for restaurants, construction, professional services, manufacturers. Modify the COA early in business setup; restructuring later requires re-mapping historical transactions.
