Accounting

A Controller is the senior accounting executive responsible for accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. Reports to the CFO in larger organizations or the CEO in smaller ones. Responsibilities: monthly/quarterly close, financial statement preparation, audit coordination, internal controls, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, tax compliance. Distinguished from CFO (more strategic, capital markets, investor relations). Compensation: $100K-$250K depending on company size. CPA typically required for public companies. Controller is often the operational backbone of finance — when controllers are weak, financial statements are unreliable; strong controllers make CFOs and external auditors' jobs much easier.
