Accounting

In double-entry bookkeeping, a credit is an entry on the right side of an account ledger. Credits increase liability, equity, and revenue accounts; decrease asset and expense accounts. Common abbreviation: CR. Despite colloquial use ('credit to my account' = add money), accounting credits are simply right-side entries. Examples: making a sale → credit Revenue (revenue increases) and debit Cash; borrowing money → credit Loans Payable (liability increases) and debit Cash. Total credits always equal total debits in any properly recorded transaction. Mastering debit/credit relationships is the gateway to understanding accounting.
