Retirement

A defined contribution plan specifies what's contributed (by employee, employer, or both) but not what's delivered in retirement. Employees direct their investments and bear all market risk. 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), Solo 401(k), SEP-IRA, and SIMPLE IRA are all defined contribution. Total annual contribution limits (employee + employer): $70,000 for 2026 ($77,500 if age 50+, $84,000 with the 60-63 super catch-up). Defined contribution plans shifted retirement risk from employers to employees, simultaneously enabling portability (rolling between jobs) but requiring much greater financial literacy for successful outcomes. The dominant private-sector retirement vehicle.
