Dividend Yield

Investing

Dividend yield expresses a stock's annual dividend as a percentage of its current share price. A $100 stock paying $3 in annual dividends has a 3% yield. Yield rises as price falls — sometimes a high yield signals a falling stock price (yield trap) rather than a true bargain. Compare yields across similar companies, not blindly across the market. Historically, S&P 500 dividend yield averaged 4-6%; in recent low-rate decades, it's been 1.5-2%. Dividend-focused investors look for sustainable payout ratios (under 60%), consistent growth (Dividend Aristocrats raised payouts 25+ years straight), and quality balance sheets.
