Accounting

The general ledger is the comprehensive collection of all financial accounts and transactions for a company — the master record from which financial statements are produced. Every transaction is recorded in journal entries that post to the relevant general ledger accounts. The trial balance summarizes all general ledger accounts to verify that debits equal credits. Modern accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP) maintains the general ledger automatically. Chart of Accounts is the structured list of all account names and numbers used in the general ledger. Reviewing the general ledger detail is how auditors verify financial statement accuracy.
