Accounting

International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is the global accounting framework used by 140+ countries — EU, UK, Canada, Australia, much of Asia. The IFRS Foundation sets standards via the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Compared to US GAAP, IFRS is more principles-based (vs. rules-based), permits revaluation of certain assets, treats LIFO differently, and has fewer specific industry rules. US public companies file in GAAP; foreign filers can use IFRS without reconciliation. Multinational companies often need both. Convergence projects between GAAP and IFRS have largely stalled, leaving meaningful differences in revenue recognition, financial instruments, and lease accounting.
