Income Statement

Accounting

The income statement (profit & loss statement, P&L) shows revenues, expenses, and resulting profit or loss over a period — quarter, year. Structure flows top-to-bottom: Revenue (top line) → Cost of Goods Sold → Gross Profit → Operating Expenses → Operating Income → Interest and Tax → Net Income (bottom line). EBITDA sits between operating income and net income, before depreciation/amortization. Margins (gross, operating, net) reveal pricing power and operational efficiency. Compare year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter trends; isolated periods can be misleading. Public companies must disclose detailed income statement breakouts under GAAP, providing comparable data across the industry.
