Private Key

A private key is the cryptographic secret that authorizes spending of cryptocurrency held at the corresponding public address. Whoever has the private key controls the funds — no recovery if lost or stolen. Private keys are typically displayed as 12 or 24-word seed phrases (BIP39 standard) that can regenerate the key. Critical security rules: never share, never store digitally (no screenshots, no cloud), never type online, backup physically (metal seed plates), keep multiple secure copies in different locations. Lost private keys have permanently locked an estimated 20% of all Bitcoin. Hardware wallets keep private keys offline, signing transactions without exposing keys.
