Revenue

Revenue (top-line) is the total dollar amount a company earns from sales of products or services before any expenses. It sits at the top of the income statement, hence 'top line.' Revenue growth indicates demand and market share; declining revenue is a serious warning sign even if margins improve temporarily. Distinguish gross revenue (before returns/discounts) from net revenue (after). For investors, revenue trends matter more than headline numbers — accelerating revenue growth in established companies is bullish; decelerating growth often precedes margin compression and stock declines. Compare revenue growth to industry peers, not absolute levels.
