Rule of 114

The Rule of 114 estimates how many years money takes to triple at a given annual return rate. Divide 114 by the return rate. 8% return = 14.25 years to triple. 12% = 9.5 years. Companion to the Rule of 72 (doubling time). Useful for longer-term planning — at 30+ year horizons, money often triples or quadruples. The Rule of 144 estimates quadrupling time. These rules are mental shortcuts derived from logarithm approximations, accurate within a year for normal return rates. Long-term wealth building math: at 8% returns, $10K becomes $20K in 9 years, $30K in 14 years, $40K in 18 years, $80K in 27 years.
