Series EE Bonds are US Treasury savings bonds purchased at face value, paying a fixed rate set at purchase. Current rate as of mid-2026: ~2.7%. Government guarantees EE bonds will double in value at 20 years (effective ~3.5% annualized) — beating the headline rate if held to that point. Purchase via TreasuryDirect, $25 minimum, $10K annual maximum. Maturity: 20 years (guaranteed doubling), 30 years (interest stops accruing). Tax-deferred until redemption; state/local tax exempt; federal tax exempt for qualified education expenses (income limits). Less popular than I-Bonds due to lower yields in low-inflation environments. EE bonds appeal during low-yield eras with the doubling guarantee.
