Statement of Equity

Accounting

The statement of stockholders' equity shows changes in owners' equity over a period — opening balance, plus net income, plus other comprehensive income, minus dividends paid, minus stock buybacks, plus stock issuance. It bridges retained earnings from one balance sheet to the next. For investors, the statement reveals capital allocation decisions: dividends versus buybacks versus reinvestment. Heavy stock-based compensation issuance dilutes existing shareholders even if the company doesn't issue traditional stock offerings. The statement also captures accumulated other comprehensive income items (currency translation, unrealized investment gains/losses, hedge accounting adjustments).
