Traditional IRA

A Traditional IRA is a retirement account funded with pre-tax (deductible) or after-tax (non-deductible) dollars where investments grow tax-deferred until withdrawal. Traditional IRA deductibility depends on income and workplace retirement plan coverage. Withdrawals after age 59½ are taxed as ordinary income; before then incur a 10% penalty (with exceptions for first-home purchase, education, medical). Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) begin at age 73. Most savers should prefer Roth IRAs unless in a very high current tax bracket expecting a lower retirement bracket — pre-tax now, taxed later is the Traditional IRA proposition. Conversion to Roth is allowed (Roth conversion).
