Treasury bonds (T-Bonds) are long-term debt securities issued by the US federal government with maturities of 20 or 30 years. They pay semi-annual interest at fixed rates and return face value at maturity. Treasuries are considered virtually risk-free (backed by the full faith and credit of the US government) and serve as the benchmark for global interest rates. Treasury interest is exempt from state and local taxes (only federal). Other Treasury types: T-Notes (2-10 years), T-Bills (4-52 weeks, sold at discount), TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities), I-Bonds (inflation-adjusted savings bonds bought at TreasuryDirect.gov).
