Treasury Direct (TreasuryDirect.gov) is the US government's direct-to-investor portal for buying Treasury securities — T-Bills, Notes, Bonds, TIPS, and I-Bonds. Skips brokerages entirely. No fees. Minimum: $100 for most securities; $25 for I-Bonds. I-Bond cap: $10K per person per year in electronic, $5K paper from tax refunds. T-Bills can be purchased at auction or in the secondary market. Interface is dated but functional. Treasury Direct is the best way to buy I-Bonds (inflation-protected savings bonds with fixed and variable rate components). Many investors hold long-term Treasury positions through brokerage ETFs (BIL, SHV, TLT) for tax simplicity and liquidity.
