Silver vs Gold — The Gold/Silver Ratio
Silver is priced in USD per troy ounce (1 troy oz = 31.1035g), just like gold. The Gold-to-Silver Ratio (GSR) — how many ounces of silver equal one ounce of gold — is a classic indicator used by precious metal traders. Historically, the GSR averages around 60–80×. When it spikes above 90×, silver is considered undervalued relative to gold, and many traders rotate from gold to silver.
In India, silver is used for jewellery, silverware, and industrial applications. It’s also used as a monetary metal in certain religious traditions. Unlike gold, silver has significant industrial demand (solar panels, electronics, medical equipment), which adds a separate demand driver to its price.
Gold/Silver Ratio = Gold Price (USD/oz) ÷ Silver Price (USD/oz)
Example: 500g silver, spot $28/oz, USD/INR = 84.5
= (500 ÷ 31.1035) × 28 × 84.5 = ₹38,106
Growing clean energy demand creates a structural floor for silver prices that gold doesn’t have.
💡 What This Means for You
Silver is more volatile than gold — it can outperform gold in bull markets and fall harder in bear markets. For most retail investors, a 5–10% allocation to precious metals (gold + silver combined) is used as a portfolio hedge. Sovereign Silver Bonds don’t exist in India — so silver investment is mainly physical or via Silver ETFs on NSE.
