Salary to Hourly Converter
Convert an annual salary to an hourly wage — or an hourly rate to annual, monthly and weekly pay. US standard of 2,080 hours a year, all figures in USD.
The formula
Hourly wage = Annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
The US full-time standard is 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours a year.
Worked example. A $60,000 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85/hour ($1,153.85 a week, $5,000 a month).
Note: this is gross pay, before taxes. Your take-home is lower after federal income tax and FICA (7.65%). To estimate net pay, use our paycheck tools below. If you take unpaid time off, lower the “weeks per year” figure to match.
Converting salary and hourly pay
Comparing a salaried offer with an hourly one is hard until both are in the same unit. This converter puts them on equal footing: enter a yearly figure to see the hourly rate it implies, or an hourly rate to see what it adds up to over a year. The default assumes a standard US full-time schedule — 40 hours a week across all 52 weeks — which works out to 2,080 paid hours a year, the number most employers and the Bureau of Labor Statistics use for full-time work.
Adjust the hours and weeks to match your situation. Part-time at 25 hours a week, or a schedule with two unpaid weeks off, changes the maths a lot. Remember that salaried roles usually include paid time off, so a salaried worker is effectively paid for weeks they do not work — keep weeks at 52 to reflect that. An hourly worker without paid leave earns only for hours actually worked, so lowering the weeks figure gives a fairer comparison.
Every number here is gross pay. Two offers with the same gross can leave you with very different take-home amounts once federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare (FICA, 7.65%) come out. Treat the hourly figure as a clean baseline for comparison, then use a paycheck calculator to see the after-tax reality.
Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
Full-time in the US is generally 2,080 hours a year (40 hours a week × 52 weeks). Part-time or schedules with unpaid weeks are lower.
Does this include taxes?
No — results are gross (pre-tax). Take-home pay is lower after federal and state income tax and FICA (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare).
Salaried vs. hourly — which is “more”?
At the same gross figure they are equal, but salaried roles usually include paid time off and benefits, so the effective hourly value is often higher.
How do I convert a part-time wage?
Enter your actual hours per week and the weeks you work. For example, 20 hours a week for 50 weeks is 1,000 hours a year.
