Effective Tax Rate

Effective tax rate is total taxes paid divided by total income — the average rate across all your income. Unlike marginal rate (which is the rate on the next dollar), effective rate captures the blended impact of progressive brackets, deductions, and credits. A single filer earning $120,000 with $15,000 in deductions might owe $19,000 federal — a 15.8% effective rate despite being in the 24% marginal bracket. Effective rate is what actually leaves your wallet; marginal rate is what to consider for decisions about earning more. Both matter. Most taxpayers vastly overestimate their effective rate because they confuse it with marginal.
