Form W-4 is the IRS form employees complete to tell employers how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck. Revised in 2020 to eliminate allowances; now uses direct dollar amounts. Step 1: personal info and filing status. Step 2: multiple jobs adjustment. Step 3: dependents and credits. Step 4: other adjustments (extra withholding, other income, deductions). Step 5: signature. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at IRS.gov helps determine optimal entries. Update W-4 after marriage, divorce, baby, second job, or major bonus to avoid surprises at tax time. State W-4s (where applicable) are separate forms.
