Frugality

Frugality is the deliberate practice of minimizing spending to free up capital for saving, investing, and prioritized goals — distinct from cheapness, which is unwilling to spend even when it's the better choice. A frugal person might pay premium for high-quality boots that last 10 years rather than cheap ones replaced annually, or spend $20,000 on travel because it aligns with their values but skip the new car. Sustainable frugality focuses on the highest-impact categories: housing (typically 25-35% of spending), transportation (15%), and food (10-15%). Cutting daily lattes saves 1%; downsizing your home or going carless saves 20%+.
