Tax

Income tax is a tax on income from labor (wages), investments (dividends, capital gains, interest), and business operations. The US has federal income tax (graduated brackets 10-37%), state income tax (rates from 0% to 13.3%), and local income tax in some cities (NYC, Philadelphia). FICA tax (Social Security + Medicare) is separate. Federal income tax is filed annually via Form 1040 by April 15 (or October 15 with extension). Tax planning strategies — maxing 401(k), Roth conversions, tax-loss harvesting, charitable bunching — focus largely on income tax optimization. Effective rates are typically far lower than marginal rates for most filers.
