An IRS audit is a review of a tax return to verify accuracy. Audit rates are low (about 0.4% overall) but rise for high-income earners (3-5% above $5M) and certain categories (high cash businesses, large charitable deductions, home office claims for W-2 employees). Three audit types: correspondence (by mail, most common), office (at IRS office), field (at your home or business, most serious). Statute of limitations: 3 years normally, 6 years for substantial underreporting (>25%), unlimited for fraud or no return filed. Keep tax records 7 years. Respond to all IRS correspondence promptly. Consider a CPA or Enrolled Agent for field audits.
