The Lifetime Learning Credit provides up to $2,000 per tax return (not per student) for qualified education expenses at eligible institutions. Calculated as 20% of up to $10,000 in expenses. Unlike the American Opportunity Credit, it: applies to all post-secondary education including graduate school and professional development; has no enrollment intensity requirement (even one course qualifies); has no four-year limit; isn't refundable. MAGI phase-out: $80,000-$90,000 single / $160,000-$180,000 married joint 2026. Best for graduate students, career-changers taking professional courses, and parents pursuing continuing education. Choose AOTC over LLC when both apply — AOTC is more valuable.
