Short-Term Capital Gain

Short-term capital gains apply to assets held one year or less before sale, taxed at ordinary income rates up to 37%. Active traders, options writers, and quick-flip real estate investors generate short-term gains. The tax cost is enormous compared to long-term: $10K of short-term gain at 32% costs $3,200; the same gain held 13+ months might cost $1,500 at 15% long-term. Day trading and short-term strategies need to outperform long-term holding by enough to overcome this tax drag — a high bar most fail to clear after taxes. The clock starts the day after purchase and counts the sale date.
