Time Value of Money

Time value of money (TVM) is the foundational concept that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow because you can invest today's dollar and earn returns. TVM underpins every financial calculation: mortgages, retirement projections, business valuations, and lottery payouts. The math has two directions — future value (what today's money becomes) and present value (what tomorrow's money is worth now). At a 7% discount rate, $10,000 received in 10 years is worth only $5,083 today. Understanding TVM lets you compare disparate offers — a $50,000 signing bonus versus a $7,000 annual raise — on an apples-to-apples basis.
