The formula

Add tax: Total = Price × (1 + rate). Tax = Price × rate.

Remove tax: Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + rate).

Example. A $100 item at a 7% combined rate costs $107.00 ($7.00 tax). Working backwards, a $107.00 total at 7% is $100.00 before tax.

Note: US sales tax is set by each state and locality and can range from 0% (e.g. Oregon, Delaware) to over 10% combined. Enter your state plus city/county combined rate for an accurate figure.

Adding and removing sales tax

Sales tax in the United States is layered: a state rate plus optional county, city, and special-district rates that combine into the number on your receipt. This tool works in both directions. Use Add tax when you have a shelf price and want the checkout total, and Remove tax when you have a receipt total and need the pre-tax amount — useful for expense reports, reimbursements, and bookkeeping where the taxable base has to be separated from the tax collected.

Because rates vary by location, always use the combined rate for the exact address of the sale. Five states have no statewide sales tax, while others exceed 9–10% once local add-ons are included. For business use, remember that sales tax you collect is a liability owed to the state, not revenue — keep it separate from your income.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price by the rate and add it. Total = price × (1 + rate). A $100 item at 7% is $107.

How do I back out the tax from a total?

Divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + rate). A $107 total at 7% is $100 before tax, so $7 was tax.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska (no state rate, some local), Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax.
