Accounting

Bookkeeping is the daily recording of business financial transactions — sales, payments, receipts, deposits, payroll. Distinguished from accounting (analyzing, summarizing, reporting on bookkeeping data). Modern bookkeeping uses software (QuickBooks, Xero, Wave, FreshBooks) to record and categorize transactions. Tasks: data entry from bank/credit card feeds, categorizing expenses, reconciling accounts, managing accounts receivable/payable, processing payroll. Proper bookkeeping enables accurate accounting, tax filing, and management decisions. Small businesses often DIY bookkeeping or hire bookkeepers ($25-$75/hour); growing businesses transition to in-house accountants or bookkeeping services as transaction volume increases.
