Coinsurance

Insurance

Coinsurance is the percentage of a healthcare bill you pay after meeting your deductible, with insurance paying the rest. Typical splits: 80/20 (insurance 80%, you 20%) or 70/30. A $20,000 surgery after a $2,000 deductible with 80/20 coinsurance: you owe deductible + 20% of remaining $18,000 = $5,600 (plus any copays). Coinsurance continues until you hit your annual out-of-pocket maximum (the cap on your total spending). Understanding coinsurance is crucial when comparing plans: lower premiums often pair with higher coinsurance. Coinsurance doesn't apply to in-network preventive care, which is fully covered.
