A High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is a health insurance plan with deductibles meeting IRS minimums ($1,650 individual, $3,300 family for 2026) and out-of-pocket maximums under specified limits ($8,300/$16,600). HDHPs qualify you to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) — the only triple-tax-advantaged account. HDHPs have lower premiums than traditional plans but require you to fund routine care until meeting the deductible. Best for: healthy individuals/families who can comfortably absorb the higher deductible and maximize HSA contributions. The HSA tax benefits often outweigh the higher out-of-pocket exposure, especially for higher-income earners.
