Silver vs Gold — The Gold/Silver Ratio

Silver is priced D per troy ounce (1 troy oz = 31.1035g), just like gold. The Gold-to-Silver Ratio (GSR) — how many ounces of silver equal one ounce of gold — is a classic indicator used by precious metal traders. Historically, the GSR averages around 60–80×. When it spikes above 90×, silver is considered undervalued relative to gold, and many traders rotate from gold to silver.

Unlike gold, silver has significant industrial demand — solar panels, electronics and medical equipment — which gives it a price driver gold does not have. It is also used for jewelry, silverware and investment bullion.

Value = Quantity (grams) ÷ 31.1035 × Spot Price (USD/oz) × FX Rate

Gold/Silver Ratio = Gold Price (USD/oz) ÷ Silver Price (USD/oz)

Example: 500g silver, spot $28/oz, USD = 84.5
= (500 ÷ 31.1035) × 28 × 84.5 = $38,106

Industrial Angle: Solar panels use ~20 grams of silver each. A 1 GW solar farm needs ~20 tonnes of silver.
Growing clean energy demand creates a structural floor for silver prices that gold doesn’t have.

💡 What This Means for You

Silver is more volatile than gold — it can outperform gold in bull markets and fall harder in bear markets. For most retail investors, a 5–10% allocation to precious metals (gold + silver combined) is used as a portfolio hedge. US investors typically hold silver either as physical bullion or through silver ETFs such as SLV or SIVR.

FAQ

Do I pay sales tax when buying silver?
It depends on your state. Many states exempt investment-grade bullion from sales tax, sometimes only above a minimum purchase amount, while others tax it at the full rate. Silver ETFs are securities and are not subject to sales tax. Check your state’s rule before buying.
What is the Gold/Silver ratio today?
The ratio changes daily. Historically (since 1990), it has averaged around 65-70×. Check live gold and silver prices on both converters to calculate the current ratio yourself.
